The operative secretary of Via Campesina, Rafael Alegria announced that this organization is preparing a world day of struggle to demand that agriculture stays out of the conventions of WTO. " The same way the popular and peasant movements had success in stopping privatization of the public services we have now to fight with the same strength to stop privatization of agriculture and water", said the leader. Rafael Alegria said that this day is also against GMOs and the intellectual property rights on seeds promoted by WTO and FTAA. " It is necessary give strength to the agenda of struggle against WTO and FTAA and in this we also expect the support of the European social movements", he expressed. He further explained that an important point in the peasants world struggle journey will be the mass meeting in Cancun in September to oppose the WTO meeting. " There is no doubt that in this WTO meeting the agreements about services, investments and agriculture will be decided, so we must strengthen our protest. We will also mobilize in March in Geneve where the preparatory meeting for Cancun will take place, said the leader of Via Campesina. Rafael Alegria referred to the agreements of the World Assembly of the Social Movements, signaling that we need to strengthen the worldwide struggle and articulation of the peoples, the solidarity and the mobilization. " I believe the document gathered the feeling of struggle of the peoples", said Alegria, who presided the final part of the Social Movements Assembly finished today, Saturday, the 25th in Porto Alegre.
