Julian Assange is in serious danger of dying in prison. This was expressed in an open letter by 60 medical doctors from different parts of the world, warning of serious concerns about the current mental and physical condition of the investigative journalist.

To these voices is added the statement issued last November 1 by the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, who underlined the continued deterioration of his health since his arrest earlier this year and assured that the life of the founder of Wikileaks is in danger.

The rapporteur expressed harsh criticism that "while the Government of the United States of America persecutes Mr. Assange for publishing information on serious violations of human rights, including torture and murder, the officials responsible for these crimes continue to enjoy impunity.”

The Forum on Communication for the Integration of Our America, a network that brings together hundreds of communicators and activists from Latin America and the Caribbean, echoes the doctors’ demand that Assange be immediately transferred to a properly equipped hospital with expert personnel to preserve his life.

Moreover, joining the worldwide appeal, we demand the denial of extradition to the United States and an end to the persecution of Julian Assange.

Julian Assange has provided reliable information and opened the world's eyes to crimes against humanity committed by the United States. The charges he faces are perverse revenge and pose a threat to freedom of expression and investigative journalism.

We urge the media, human rights groups and international organizations to resolutely accompany Assange's demand for absolute freedom.

This is the only way to achieve justice!
